Well the political winds are blowing as well on many fronts. Fortunately they'll subside eventually after the November elections but unfortunately they never diminish in the refereeing environment, as we all know.

Coming from a playing background I can't ever recall being left off the starting eleven for reasons OTHER than poor recent form or lack of ability or an injury.

I'm just curious as to why then there is a fourth criteria applied many times in the referee selection process. That being the "P" word.

"Sorry Mr. Ref X we've decided that Mr. Ref Y will get the whistle today. It has nothing to do with your ability. I'm sure you understand."

If a coach made a statement like that to a player he would be considered a fool and incompetent.

This perplexes me.
